Planning what to wear for photos might be one of the hardest parts of getting photos taken, so let's make it easy! Here I will break down what I recommend what to wear to your couples sessions.
The key part of your couple photos is that they feel like you and represent you two as a couple! Couples photos often require movement and walking around to find new spots to shoot in, so comfort is always an important ingredient to any outfit formula.
For longer sessions with multiple locations, I recommend at least two outfits. I like to start with a more formal, elegant outfit that you feel good in! This could be a dress or skirt and/or a button down or suit jacket. It is important that you feel comfortable and confident in what you are wearing! Consider shoe options too as this can definitely affect movement and longevity of the shoot.
I like to do this shoot in a location like a field, wooded area, or architecturally interesting spot, like the Wisconsin capitol building. These are going to be the more elegant, aesthetic focused photos probably involving more movement.
If you have second location or don't want to do the formal route, I recommend an outfit that feels like you. I like to call this your character outfit. If you were an animated character, it would be your everyday outfit. Something you would throw on to go to the movies or to go have dinner with friends. This allows us to be the most comfortable and ourselves in front of the camera, helping us create more authentic photos.
For me personally, this would be jeans and a brown simple top, maybe a denim jacket as I often go for a "Canadian tuxedo" look :)
For the location, I prefer to choose something important/common to you. This could be your front yard, a park near your house, the theatre you went to your first date on, the street where you walk your dog, anywhere that holds significant memories for you. I want you to look back and feel those moments as genuinely as you do in your day-to-day life.
These usually end up being some of my clients' favorite photos because they can truly see themselves in them.
